Livestream Audience Engagement Is Critical
Audience engagement is crucial for retention, larger follower count, social media account monetization etc. but most importantly, it is more fun when more humans play together and are more engaged with the ongoing activities.
We won’t bore you by regurgitating common engagement strategies that you read online, but rather, let us show you something different and is called The Modality Effect. (We’re engineers and physicists, so we love learning about science and applying them. So this post is about to trend nerdy.)
Professor Richard Mayer from University of California Santa Barbara spent decades studying human perceptions and theorized that humans’ visual and auditory receptors are two separate paths (e.g. “Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning” by Richard E. Mayer). In a multimedia environment, such as live-streaming, humans can process information more effectively when both the visual and auditory receptors are engaged. And also, humans short term memories are more crisp when the information is received via audio. In other words, we remember better when we hear it.

To demonstrate, we developed a game called Modality Effect using devvit and it is published on Reddit. In this game, a random number is displayed, the player has limited time to memorize it. As the game progresses, the number contains more and more digits. A typical human can memorize 6/7 digits if they read it visually and 7/8 digits if they heard it (George A. Miller's "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information," published in Psychological Review in 1956 (Vol. 63, No. 2, pp. 81–97).). What This Means For Livestreamers
